Are we missing the mark on obesity? Our current medical system is defined by what I like to call the “insurance pyramid” or the “FDA pyramid”. The FDA studies and approves “medicines” for human use, pharmacies “dispense” the FDA approved “medicines”, and physicians prescribe the FDA approved “medicines”. If things are not in the pyramid either in research or as “medicines” then your physician will not know about them, unless he is highly self motivated to read a lot. Generally insurance will not reimburse for things outside the FDA/insurance pyramid (nutraceuticals would be considered part of the “pyramid”).

So what does the insurance pyramid say about “obesity” as a condition? According to Obesity Medicine (, obesity is defined as “a chronic, relapsing, multifactorial, neurobehavioral disease, wherein an increase in body fat promotes adipose tissue dysfunction and abnormal fat mass physical forces, resulting in adverse metabolic, biomechanical, and psychosocial health consequences.”

According to medicine.Net (  the “cause” of obesity is “The balance between calorie intake and energy expenditure determines a person’s weight. If a person eats more calories than he or she burns (metabolizes), the person gains weight (the body will store the excess energy as fat). If a person eats fewer calories than he or she metabolizes, he or she will lose weight. Therefore, the most common causes of obesity are overeating and physical inactivity. Ultimately, body weight is the result of genetics, metabolism, environment, behavior, and culture.” and according to about 40% of use are OBESE!

States track the level of obesity and we range from 40% obese in the worst state to 25% obese in the best state. Colorado boosts the lowest obesity rates at 25%.

To make matters worse, this problem is not getting better it is getting worse. This would indicate researchers, physicians, and the “insurance” pyramid are WAY OFF the mark. This is a problem that is getting far worse, not better. It is directly effecting the health of 40% of us. Treatments are not working.

So if you are in the 25% to 40% of obese individuals what are you told, and what happens? You are told you are weak and lazy basically. So a “judgement” is passed on you. You are prescribed, according to the insurance triangle, hormones or steroids. ALL of these have unintended consequences and are NOT SAFE.

So what is the answer? We here at GnuPharma would argue that we have missed the mark on obesity. It is not a “will power” issue at all. It is simply an inflammation issue. IT IS AN INFLAMMATION ISSUE. This can be demonstrated in numerous ways and is illustrated with several major statistics. First, even according to the FDA, there are major food groups that cause allergies. Milk, eggs, fish, shellfish, tree nuts, peanuts, wheat, and soybeans. If you take a sec and think about it, these foods are in everything. So how many of us are allergic, either mildly or severely, to these common items? Here statistics vary wildly. Most agree that at least 10% of us are allergic to these items to the point that they would cause hives and rashes.  Causing hives and rashes a pretty severe allergic reaction and our guess here is that many many more than previously thought have milder allergic symptoms (like inflammation…).

So what happens when you eat foods that you are allergic to? You inflame. In a very similar fashion to when you rub something like poison ivy on your skin, and you inflame, a similar reaction takes place in our stomach and intestines when we eat things we are allergic to. Consider skin that is inflamed, can you absorb well thru it? NO, absolutely you cannot. So what happens when our guts are inflamed and we can only absorb 50%, or 25%, or 10% of what we eat? Specifically we have to eat 2x, 4x, or 10x as much, meaning we have to consume a bunch more calories to get our nutrients. You can see the horrible feedback loop this can create with people with even mild allergies. They have to consume far more calories to get their needed nutrients.

So, if obesity is “inflammation” how do we treat it? Easy peasy. CBD’s a known anti-inflammatory. Hemp derived CBD’s known to be SAFE. Many natural products have high anti-inflammatory properties and target the gut. Certain strains of cannabis also have high anti-inflammatory properties. Taking a cannabis/CBD/natural products direction can be done by sticking to the FDA GRAS (Generally Regarded As Safe=GRAS) list of herbs. This approach is very SAFE. Further the efficacy can be very high if the proper formulations are built. So SAFE and EFFECTIVE strategies available.

In the future, physicians will have new “tools”. In particular a physician will be properly educated about our master regulatory system called the endocannabinoid system or ECS. Physicians of the future will look with ECS eyes rather than insurance pyramid eyes. This will revolutionize medicine and create a much longer and healthier life span for us all.  Further, the “insurance pyramid” is NOT SAFE and almost every medicine has contra-indications. With ECS eyes we will have super safe and efficacious remedies in both the cannabis/hemp world and the natural products world.
